Siglent Vs Rigol – Which Brand Should You Choose?
Choosing a brand that will meet your needs is usually a tricky issue. Because every product was designed to meet a specific need and some products are sometimes similar to a point you cannot differentiate them. That is until you decide to dig a bit deeper.
And this might seem the case with Siglent and Rigol. Both of these companies are from China and they are both innovative companies that are designed to meet the needs of different fields from engineers to educators. Let us look at each company.
Siglent Technologies is a company that manufactures high quality Digital Storage-Oscilloscopes (DSO) since 2002. It has more than 13 years experience in the manufacturing field and exports its products to more than 40 countries worldwide.
It has a growing reputation as a leader in the manufacture of DSOs and employs over 300 people with more than 100 of them being engineers. It prides itself in having one of its core values as innovation and invests 15% of the total sales into research and development annually. This has led to acquiring a number of patents with many of its core technologies becoming a leader in global trends.
Rigol Technologies is a test and measurement leader and a technology innovator in Electronic measurement and Chemical analysis. It was founded in 1998 and offers a wide array of products from Digital Oscillators to Spectrophometers. The company has over 400 employees with over 150 distributors and offers its services to over 60 countries worldwide.
They are committed to test and measurement but its top priority is responding to customer needs with speed and agility. Rigol differentiates itself from its competitors by providing low cost equipment that will help engineers, educators and researchers overcome challenges with confidence and affordability.
Now both of them produce oscilloscopes. This is equipment that is used to observe the change of an electrical signal over time. It might seem like these companies make the same products but they are different is a lot of aspects. As seen below.
This is what determines the ability of the oscilloscope to measure a signal. What this means is that as the frequency of the signal increases, the capability of the oscilloscope decreases. Because of this feature most oscilloscopes will come with different measuring parameters.
Siglent have a number of oscilloscopes ranging in series and all have different categories ranging from 50 MHz to 300MHz. Now Rigol oscilloscopes have models that range from 50 MHz to 1 GHz. Thus the Rigol has a higher capacity to measure very high frequencies as opposed to Siglent. This ultimately becomes a favourite in measuring the bandwidth.
A channel is an input point for which can be used to trigger an oscilloscope trace. Therefore in order to trigger multiple traces, an oscilloscope with multiple channels would be needed. And it will come in two variations, either analog or digital. For Siglent, it offers oscilloscopes that come have both the analog and digital signal. For instance, the SDS2000X series comes with 2 and 4 channel analog systems and 16 digital channels which are optional.
It is only another series, the SDS1000X that comes with both the analog and digital channels. All other series just come with analog channels. For Rigol, some models come with both the analog and digital. They are more than 20 products that come with it. And with 4 more that can be upgraded to digital channels if the user wants to.
3. Real Time Sampling Rate.
This is the number of mega (MSa/s) or giga (GSa/s) samples that can be must be taken in order to accurately reconstruct a wave form. And it has to be at least twice the maximum frequency that is to be measured. And the sampling rate in single channel is double that in dual channel.
And this is what Siglent did with the SDS2000X series which offers 2 GSa/s single channel and 1 GSa/s for the dual channel. The other series just offer the 2 GSa/s single channel or the 1 GSa/s dual channel with the lowest going at 500MSa/s. Rigol models range from a high of 5GSa/s to a low of 1GSa/s.
4. Capture Rate
This refers to how quickly an oscilloscope can acquire a waveform. For most oscillators, capturing a waveform can be tricky because it will spend a few seconds processing the previous waveform and thus miss out on new existing waveforms. Thus the more frequently the oscillator updates the waveforms, the more accurate it is. It is captured in Waveforms per Second (Wfms/s).
Siglent oscilloscopes can capture waveforms at levels of 60,000 wfms/s to 140,000 wfms/s for normal mode and 400,000 wfms/s to 500,000 wfms for sequence mode. But this only applies to the later series products. Earlier series do not have a capture rate. Rigol models have a capture rate that ranges from 400 wfms/s to 180,000 wfms/s. It only has 4 products that do not have a capture rate.
5. Memory Depth
This is one of the most important aspects of Digital Oscillators. The memory depth is the duration for which a captured sample can be stored in the buffer memory before the memory is full. Therefore the deeper the memory storage is for the oscillator and the more samples are stored the better the sample rate. And the higher the sample rate the more effective the bandwidth is.
Siglent has a memory depth for which the newer series offers single and double channel outputs. Single channels cover all the series products ranging from 24 ktps to 140 mtps. For the dual channel, the series range from 7 mpts to 70 mpts. Rigol products which only have single channel range from 1 mpts to 140 mpts.
6. Vertical Sensitivity
This basically refers to how much the oscilloscope amplifier can boost a weak signal with the smallest being able to detect about 2 millivolts (mV) per vertical screen division. It controls the value of each major division and the period and amplitude of each wavelength.
Siglent scales the vertical sensitivity of its oscillators to a minimum of 5 mV/Div while Rigol is able to scale its oscillators to a minimum of 0.5 mV/Div.
Siglent has been able to make it easier for its users. It has hand held oscillators that can be used in any place. It only has two series of the oscillators. They come with a bandwidth ranging from 60 MHz to 200MHz. It only provides 2 analog channels. The sampling rate is 1 GSa/s and a memory depth of just 2 mpts.
Also, with it comes a multimeter that the 8 formal functions like a usual multimeter and the SHS1000 coming with an isolation level of 1000 V CAT I and 600V CAT II. The SHS 800 has no isolation level. Rigol has no hand held devices.
Depending on the series, the price range is not all that big for the products in just their respective companies but when you compare both companies, a wide margin will be noticed. For Siglent, the prices range depending on the series from which you want to buy from with the earliest versions or series being quite cheap.
But they also come with low specifications. So for the lower series, the price will be just between $150 and $350. Now that offers the freedom to compare with what you have to the series that will meet your needs. Also you will put into consideration what you want from that series. Now for all the series together the prices range from $150 - $5000. Now compared to Rigol which prides itself to providing affordable product prices range from $150 - $10,000.
